What is temperature?

Consider what happens on a molecular level when temperature changes. Watch the video clip below that models the movements of gaseous molecules as temperature increases.

What do you see?

Notice that the molecular movement gets faster as temperature rises. The main difference between air molecules at -15°C and 35°C is their energy. Temperature is defined by the average kinetic energy of the molecules within a substance.
